In this Letter From Afar, journey all the way to Venice, Italy where every September for the last 200 years, a very special event takes place.

For centuries, the only means of transport in the city of Venice was by means of rowing a wooden gondola from point A to point B. One had to be very strong to maneuver the boats through the tiny canals, and Venetian rowing soon became known as a specialized art and skill that holds deep pride for the locals.

The Regata Storica is a festivity that celebrates the long history of Venetian rowing. Thousands of spectators gather near the lagoon every September to witness a beautiful water parade of giant, classic, decorated boats. Some are bedecked in gold and engraved wood, while others sport waving flags and costumed rowers as they glide gracefully through the water. The parade is followed by an exciting race where highly skilled rowers zoom their way down the canals in a fierce competition.... so fierce, in fact, it’s said that the racing boats must be painted a different color each year to prevent accusations of cheating!
